Save Yourself, Save Your Community, Save the World

Often times I sit and wonder what I can do to help the world. And also on a more granular scale, how I can help my family and community. I am sure I am not alone in that respect. There are plenty of people I have spoken to, whether friends or random conversations in ride shares about the current state of the planet. In the past month alone I’ve had conversations about global warming, mental illness, homelessness and people working multiple jobs to make ends meet. It wasn’t until I listened to the much polarized Jordan Peterson that the concept of saving myself started circulating in my brain. By making sure that my own personal life is in order, I can then turn to helping my loved ones, my community and then my planet. Many people do not agree with him, but I would be hard-pressed to …

Dealing With Discomfort

In an attempt to get in shape for a ten kilometer race that I will have run last Saturday, I have been running on a regular basis. I had a brief stint on the track team in college before I gave up to focus more on my classes. And while I was not on the team for a long time, I learned a lot from my coach and had no complaints about the transformation my body took after several weeks of practice. But the great runner's physique that I developed was not enough for me to fall in love with the sport. So it was to my surprise when training for this race that I found myself enjoying my runs. The Nike Run Club app does a good job of making the experience more motivating with their excellent “Guided Runs”. My friends will attest to how much I push Nike Run Club and its sister application Nike …

Hiking Through Echo Mountain

When I was in high school I played basketball and tried to play football. Emphasis on the tried. I was very fast and athletic but the ball always slipped through my hands, even with gloves. For both of the sports I participated in, I do not remember a practice where we spent the entire session playing a full game. All of the practice sessions involved getting our bodies and minds ready by stretching and receiving a talk from the coaches where they laid out a plan of action for the next game. After the talk from the coaches the players slowly went through the plays we planned on running. The team lined up and walked through those plays at what seemed like a 5% speed. There were tons of mistakes even at 5%. There were even more mistakes when we picked up the speed. But through repet…

Should You Use a VPN?

In the age of cybercrimes, government surveillance, and companies collecting personal data, it seems that we are surrounded on all fronts when it comes to those wanting to break down the gates to our privacy. It seems that there are eyes and ears all around us, watching and listening to our every move. I understand the need to stay current with new technologies, but I do believe that corporations can develop these techs without the need to gather so much of our data. The government can protect us without the mass surveillance they do in the name of security. And we can thwart would-be snoopers from looking through our web traffic if we empower ourselves to do so. We can do all of these things by utilizing a VPN. A VPN which stands for Virtual Private Network allows you to browse the…

California passed a law titled the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 which went into effect at the turn of the decade. Since January 1st, Californians have been treated to a law that is meant to protect them from the countless companies profiting off an individual’s personal information. You may have heard of the European equivalent, the General Data Protection Regulation, commonly referred to as the GDPR which is similar to this law. After reading through the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) bill text which can be found at https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201720180AB375, I found that we can opt-out of companies collecting and sharing our data unless it is required for criminal investigation, legal claims, required for research and othe…
